We have condensed our histories and experiences with TMJ to help our members, newcomers to our group and readers. We hope this thread will be helpful to everyone in regard to asking questions and seeking help from our qroup of TMJ Sufferers and Members. Our full list of stories and histories can be found here. Posts: 85 (03/26/06 08:30:18) COMMUNITY More My Recent Posts	Atibbert Name - Amy Age 41 Diagnosed - 2003 Diagnosis - TMJ Cause - Having upper wisdom teeth extracted, compounded by multiple surgeries recommended by oral surgeon Treatments - Surgeries, splints, pain management, trigger point injections, physical therapy Surgeries - 11/03 arthrocentesis left side, 2/04 arthrocentesis left side, 4/04 arthrocentesis left side, 6/04 arthroplasty left side, disc sewn into place, bone spurs shaved down, bone recontoured. Opening went from 10mm to 29mm but left with nerve damage and chronic pain. Related Ailments - peripheral neuralgia Meds - MsContin 30mgs am, 60mgs midday, 30mgs bedtime; 4mgs dilaudid up to 12 times daily; Soma 4 times a day; Norflex 2 times daily; Topamax 100mgs 2 times daily, Ambien as needed Condition - Chronic pain with terrible headaches, soft food diet for last 2 years. Pain increases with eating, talking, any movement. On round the clock long acting narcotic medication and two muscle relaxers. Peripheral nerve damage from open joint surgery. Current status - Chronic pain, poor function, daily headaches, waiting on results of recent MRI and having surgical consult on 3/30 and 4/6/06.

Treatments - Braces, Splints, Surgeries Surgeries - Listed 1977 - Wisdom teeth surgically removed due to pain, leading to diagnosis of TMJ. 1988 - (June & Sept) 2 Orthognathics -Bi-lateral Sagittal Splits with Genioplasty. 1990 - Extensive bone grafts due to undetected low grade infection. 1992 - Bi-lateral Arthroplasty. Discectomy with ear cartilage. Failed, 2 years. 1997 - Discectomy with no replacements. 2002 - Pain & function still bad. Turned down for TJR. CAM - PT, Chiro., Accupuncture, Pain Management, Tens, Bio-feedback, Home Exercise, Heat, Skilled Relaxation, MT Related Ailments - Fibro or MPS, TN, Hyperacusis, Tinnitus, Depression Meds - Pain Management 1997-2002 Condition - Extremely bad until muscular problems were treated with MT and in 12/02, my first splint therapy since 1992. Current status 2006 - Great. No pain or symptoms and good function due to continuing splint therapy.

Treatments-Splints, Traction, and surgeries. Surgeries-Listed 1987- Open joint to sew disc back in place 1989- Open joint to clean out scar tissue and remove osteophytes. 1997- Open joint. Disectomy, implanted with Christensen Fossa Prosthesis. CAM-PT. Accupuncture, Tens unit, Heat/Cold, Cortisone Injections. Related Ailments- Back pain, headaches, depression. Meds- Pain Management 2002 through present. Condition- In a lot of pain due to severe back problems. Headaches are not as often, if I am careful what I eat.

Posts: 85 (03/26/06 08:36:44) COMMUNITY More My Recent Posts	FPDChief/Catswold Name - Carol Age 52 Diagnosed - 1980 Diagnosis - TMJ Treatments - Braces, Splints Surgeries None, though it was recommended twice and I looked into it another time. CAM (Complimentary & Alternative Treatments) Chiro, PT, Massage Therapy, Heat & Ice, TENS & Ultrasound, and Injections into Jaw Joints. Meds - Prozac, Buspar, Lyrica, Lipitor daily; Zomig, Zanaflex and Vicoprofen when needed for migraines, TMJ muscle spasms and pain Related Ailments - Tinnitus.The usual head, neck and shoulder aches and pains. Due to a brain MRI and certain symptoms, it has been suggested that I have relapsing-remitting MS, but I have not followed through with more testing. Ive only had 3 major flare-ups in 23 years. Current status - Just recently went through a 3-year bad TMJ phase but for about a month now, my TMJ seems to be calming down with only occasional minor flare-ups. What I believe helped me this time was reducing stress (changing jobs), taking Prozac and Buspar every night, wearing bottom bite splint at night, regular cranial sacral massage therapy and concentrating on my posture. For the first time in 25 years, I finally found medications that help take away the pain when my TMJ flare-ups (Vicoprofen and Zanaflex).

Had root canal and still in pain. Finally had molar pulled. Still in pain. Finally my dentist sent me to Dr Austin. He has taught me how to manage TMJ pain. It is still a struggle

Posts: 85 (03/26/06 08:43:00) COMMUNITY More My Recent Posts	Quirkyvirgo Name - Tandi Age 27 Diagnosed - 1988, age 10 with popping/clicking and headaches Diagnosis - TMJ Dysfunction, Rule out Fibromyalgia Cause - Unknown (depends on who I see) Treatments - Splints, Braces, Surgery Surgeries -2005- Bilateral arthroscopy and arthrocentesis CAM - MT, Pain Management, Splint Therapy Related Ailments - Possibly fibro, chronic neck/shoulder tension, chronic tension headaches Compressed cervical discs Meds - Soma x 2 daily, Lortab x 1 daily Condition - Worse pain/function than ever before. Tolerable only with constant medication. Current status 2006 - Have been on a very soft diet for a little over a year now, except about 3 weeks post arthroscopy and during one session of high dose steroids. Very little function in joints, any opening is painful. Stressful days at work and presentations greatly exacerbate symptoms. Exploring possibility of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Consulted TMJD surgeon who recommended TMJ Concepts.

Diagnosed - 2003 (treatment for sinusitis up until ENT said it was TMJ) Diagnosis - TMJ, Myofacial pain, arthritis in right jaw Cause - Ill fitting dentures (didnt fit my real jaw) Treatments - Two TMJ dentists with splint and adjustments, three rounds of PT Surgery - None CAM - cranio sacral massage and acupuncture, chiro Related Ailments - bad neck and shoulder problems (also effects the rest of my body, not walking too well), tinnitus, depression Meds - Vicodin, Cymbalta, Klonopin Condition - Pain under control, mouth so messed up I cant wear dentures without doing myself bodily harm (cuts down on social whirl) Current Status - Mostly emotional problems from being house-bound, having to quit work, etc.

Posts: 85 (04/18/06 03:20:34) COMMUNITY More My Recent Posts	MaggieMay78 Name - Meg, age 27 Diagnosed - 2005 (MPD), 2006--internal derangement Diagnosis - initially, myofascial pain, now I have internal derangement of both discs Cause - symptoms began after extraction of 4 deeply impacted wisdomt teeth...I think that clenching at night and an unusually stressful year has perpetuated the problem. Treatments - two splints Surgeries - none, though it was recently suggested and I'm trying to avoid that! CAM - (Complimentary & Alternative Treatments) massage therapy, heat/ice, acupuncture Meds - Klonopin, Zanaflex, ibuprofen Related Ailments - stiff neck, shoulders, upper back Current status - I have very bad headaches in the left temple at times. I have pain 24/7, mild to moderate about 5 days/week, and more severe about 2 days/week. My facial muscles fatigue very easily after talking. Also, limited jaw opening and on soft diet for the last two months.

Posts: 85 (06/11/07 04:46:36) COMMUNITY More My Recent Posts	Beth66 Name - Beth66, Age 41 Diagnosed - January of 2006, age 39 Diagnosis - TMJ Dysfunction Cause - Unknown, but probably just the way my jaw developed, had braces as a child, teeth have become increasingly crowded Very bad malocclusion, both anterior and posterior Treatments - Splints Surgeries -None CAM - Chiropractic (helps but stopped going) Related Ailments - I have irritable bowel, they say it might be related Meds - Klonopin (5 mg a night), Advil or Motrin Condition - Improving Current status - Getting better now that I am seeing a new dentist. Made me a repositioning upper splint which I wore for about 2 months. Will transition to a stabilizing lower splint in another week and wear for 6 months. If painfree I must have my bite fixed to coincide with jaw.

Got new one made in 1988, clinching and grinding esp when sleeping.In 2001 went on Steriods for auto- immune dis. also had popping feeling for long time Treatments - mouthpeice that never fit right, and could not where in 1990, afer diag of dislocation, PT, pain meds, musc le relax. arth. meds, heating pad Surgeries - listed, also more extraction, and root canels Condition - Mostly managable up until Dec 2006, after diag.od dislocation in April 2007, and PT for almost 2 months, much better. As of July 2007,severe pain esp with eating and in the morning after waking. Popping, and feeling of bone on bone rubbing until present. Currant Status - not good, lots of headaches, neck, shoulders face, joint area. facing poss. Discectomy, very stressed.

Marked decreased range of motion (TMJ with internal derangement) Cause - possible teeth grinding, first tmj without disc dislocation around 1999 after wearing a nightguard for one night. in 2007 i woke up after sleeping on my stomach with my neck to one side--jaw dislocated and discs popped out. Treatments - Amitriptyline to stop teeth grinding, osteopath, vitamin d treatments( 4000 IU's) (I'm deficient), gluten free diet(delayed allergy to gluten, wheat and candida), possibly an anti-candida diet depending on blood test results, herbs and vitamins for GI repair from food allergies, adrenal supplement(herbs and vitamins) depending on adrenal test results, allergy shots to decrease my 'bucket' and things that stress my body out and inhibit tissue repair. Trying to sleep on my back. MSM/glucosamine Surgeries - None CAM - See treatment! Anti candida diet, gluten free diet, CAM allergy shots, adrenal and GI repair supplements, Vitamin D3, osteopath, MSM and glucosamine for TM joint repair, fish oil Related Ailments - possible systemic candida, delayed food allergies to wheat, gluten and candida, vitamin D deficiency, possible thoracic outlet syndrome(what now is believed to have actually been food allergies and vitamin D deficiency), musclular tightness(now believed to possibly be vitamin D deficiency and food allergys) Meds - Amitriptyline, Vitamin D3, adrenal and GI supplements, MSM and glucosamine for TM joint repair, fish oil Condition - 75% out of 100%. I have good and bad days. The amitriptyline keeps me from grinding or clenching, or at least the amount down that I grind or clench, so i can heal and figure out why I do it, how to stop it and support healing. My jaw does seem to pop in and out from side to side, and I wish I could get that to stop. I also find it easier to chew on my right side than my left side. Current status Good, unless I clench my teeth or eat something to hard or chewy. It's hard to say how much of this is me and how much of it is the amitriptyline, but I'm on a pretty low dosage, so I hope it's me!
