I just wondered how many of you go see a chiropractor. I have been told I should try it. I am afraid it will make everything worse. Any advice would be great. Thanks Lu

Lu, I see a chiropractor, but he doesn't touch anything with my jaw. He only adjusts my c-spine. It relieves the tension and headaches that the muscles cause by pulling on the vertebrae.

Lu,
I used to go to a chiropractor before I had back surgeries. Now I am told by every doctor that I go to, to stay away from them. I had one chiro adjust my neck one time and that was enough for me. I sometimes wonder if they pop you in and out to keep you coming back? Elaine |

Chiropractors | ||
|
I've been both helped and hurt by chiropractors. I don't recommend letting anyone do that kind of neck adjustment. Also, a tmj specialist told me to be sure and wear my splint during the adjustments because the adjustments can change things. I have chosen to go to an osteopath and/or physical therapist trained in osteopathic adjustments. I've never tried rolphing and have yet to try craniosacral. I'm excited about seeing an osteopath tomorrow morning for my work-related back injury. He's also an acupuncunturist and has other good people staff at his clinic...

I have a GREAT chiropractor!
|
I go to a chiropractor, and she really helps the neck, shoulder, and back pain. However, she never touches my jaw. As a matter of fact, she is really careful when she adjusts my neck not to irritate the jaw. I think that there are some really good chiropractors who really care about their patients. I also think that there are a lot of quacks out there pretending like they care. I happen to have a wonderful one, who I have known for about 10 years. I trust her whole heartedly. However, I would not be trusting of all chiropractors. Pick and choose wisely.

I have seen 4 different chiropractors, two who advertise that they specialise in TMJ. They were all useless as far as TMJ treatment was concerned, ok with other problems, i.e. neck, back etc.etc, but absolutely useless with TMJ.

Thanks everyone. I still think I'll keep on doing what I do instead of going to a chiro. I'm chicken and don't want to be hurt any more. Thanks again.Lu

Two Types of Chiropractors
|
There are basically two types of chiropractors the musculoskeletal chiropractors who work on symptom relief and the traditional chiropractors who work on subluxation and structural correction.
THE SYMPTOM RELIEF CHIROPRACTOR Like the typical M.D. this type of chiropractor primarily focuses on relief of symptoms (for example, back pain and headaches). Manipulations are done to the spine to decompress the joints, free fixations and reduce pain. In addition, electro therapies such as diathermy, electro stimulation, tens units and laser acupuncture, are often used. In some of the states of our nation, chiropractors are even trying to "expand their scope of practice" to prescribe drugs. Monitoring patient's progress by symptoms and insurance coverage, usually means shorter overall treatment time, but still leaves the patient far short of correcting the Cause of the symptom. The patient may feel better temporarily, but since the spine remains structurally misaligned, it degenerates silently and results in damage and dysfunction to discs, joints, and whatever part of the body the nerve supplies. Currently, many medical experts see little value and even harm in simply treating symptoms. THE TRADITIONAL CHIROPRACTOR This type of chiropractor practices the traditional philosophy of chiropractic, which is subluxation, and structural correction of the spine. Simply put, a subluxation is a misaligned vertebrae, which interferes with the nerve impulses. Nerve impulse is the electrical impulse from the brain that regulates all function of the body and keeps us alive. Although the traditional chiropractor wants his patients to "feel better," his primary focus is removing the nerve interference (subluxation) and restructuring the spine to its most stable biomechanical position. This is done through a program of adjustments and spinal exercises. The length of correction and frequency of adjustment is determined by the severity of the patient's subluxations and structural alignment, not symptoms! Symptoms may be gone long before the spine is at its maximum corrected position so adjustment schedules may be kept intense to allow structural correction in the shortest amount of time. The patient is then closely monitored by postural patterns, X-rays and computerized tests that monitor subluxations until the subluxations are corrected and the spine is in its proper alignment and function. By reviewing these before and after studies with the doctor, the patient actually sees the results. |

Hi Lu,
I have been to 2 chiro. One did some jaw adjustments...didn't seem to do a thing. The other did some deep muscle massage, then adjustments to my neck and back. My husband just said tonight...he thinks the deep muscle one made my ear pain worse??? who knows? I don't think I will do it again. I saw a friend at Walmart this afternoon that told me she had good luck with a PT, for her TMJ. Becky M. |

Thanks, Becky I think I will stick with soaking in my hot tub and doing my jaw and neck stretches. No use doing something that can make my aches and pains worse. Thanks for the info.Lu

Hi Everyone: I am having good results with my physical therapy. She massages my jaw very gently and does the tens device. I don't need at home stretchs because my jaw opening is very wide. Everyone should try physical therapy for TMJ.

PS. I would never go to a chiropractor. If you paid me I would not go. I don't believe in them and don't know anyone who was helped by them for TMJ.
