The good news is that she got better. I know that his book mentions repositioning splints, but his book may have been written before creation and approval of the NTI.
Just wanted to hear any experience you may have had with him.

Has anyone been to see him personally. I spoke to a woman on the phine a month ago that actually had surgery by him. He removed about 1/4" bone marrow from her jaw bone and made her an NTI to wear after the surgery.

Iva,
I've read the book too, it is an excellent book. I e-mailed him about a year ago. He is very nice, and e-mailed me back several times. I had an appointment to go see him, then something came up?, and I ended up going to a TMJ dentist here in Peoria, IL. I just said yesterday, if I don't get some relief from the paxil, I will go to Dr. Shankland. Becky M. |

I read his book too and use it for a reference book. It is very informative for TMJ patients. I did e-mail him but he never e-mailed me back. I am surprised he responded to your e-mail. If I lived in Ohio I would definitely try him.

I live in Cincinnati so he's only about 1 1/2 hours away. I'm going to try a local ortho for a NTI next week. If that fails, I'm definately going to see him. I'd love to eat potato chips, salad and be able to kiss my fiance again.
Thanks for the response. Now I live on Xanax and an occassional Vicodin. |

I called his office over two years ago, and they mailed me an informative packet of information. The impression I got was a good one...

Hi Iva, I see that you are interested in getting an NTI...please just make sure it's adjusted properly, just like any other splint. I had an NTI that was not adjusted correctly for my bite, and it made my symptoms worse. Also, not to scare you...but just to make sure you're informed, be careful that you do not develop an "open bite." I know many people use the NTI and are OK with it...but some people do develop open bites, and that is definitely not something you need to be dealing with! Anyway, I hope this brings you some relief. Good luck and keep us posted!

Iva:
Just wanted to add my caution to Meg's. I had two NTIs, one which was not adjusted correctly and made me worse, and one that was adjusted correctly that wore for two months prior to and during the initial phases of my bite reconstruction. It brought me a lot of relief, but my dentist does not like to have people wear them constantly for more than a few months because of the open bite issue. Becky L. |
