My TMJ doctor started me on the Lidoderm patch to put on my jaw at night. He also perscribed a low dosage muscle relaxer. I can't tell you how wonderful this patch is. I saw immediate results!!!

What is a Lidoderm patch? Is it for pain?

Re: Patch | ||

Lidoderm patch is for pain. It is Lidocaine which is a pain killer. All I know is that it helped me. I put it on both sides of my jaw when I get home and wear it through the night. It penetrates into the skin with an anesthetic. I am also on a mild muscle relaxer I take when I go to sleep. I find both things help me along with physical therapy. So it is true what everyone says, not only a nightguard helps but a combination of treatments.

Wow, that is interesting. Do you know the dose of the Lidoderm patch or is it all the same?
I might think about asking for that. I can usually take some sort of sleeping med and/or pain med if I should need it, but due to my job I am usually on call one night a week As in tonight - and I am up as I can't take anything to help me and so I am wide awake with insomnia.......and somewhere in my neighborhood I can hear beepbeep of heavy machinery backing up and I swear it sounds like someone is demolishing a barn in the middle of the night! I'm gonna lose my mind! Nightguards/bite plates don't help me (been through several) they actually make my jaw WORSE. So this might be something for me to look into! Thx! Ginni in WI |

Ginni,
If I remember correctly, you are a nurse...correct? My pain doctor has suggested both a patch and botox injections to numb and deaden the nerves. I am a special case however. I am allergic to Lidocaine, Marcaine, Novacaine, and almost all of the others. I know of only 3 cains that can be used on me without causing anaphilaxis (sp?). Can a patch be compounded with a different ingredient? Have you ever heard of using Botox to relieve nerve pain? I am willing to try anything. If anyone could answer my questions I would be greatful. Thanks, Tecee |

I am sorry for responding late but have been working late every night. It is Lidocain 5 percent. You can cut it to fit on your jaw. They also use this for back pain.
I don't think we are allowed to give out doctor's names on the internet. You can ask any TMJ doctor about the patch, I am sure they know about it. Michelle |
