I'm going to call the old OS tomorrow morning and ask if he can seem me on an ASAP basis. I'm going to explain that if I go to the ER that they don't know what to do with me. I think probably my younger son quitting his job was a God-send because he can help me better. Apparently, they didn't want him to quit. They said take a week off and see how you feel. So at least, he has shown himself worthy. I think he just subconsciously suspected that he needed to help me. That was the reason he gave for quitting. I'm feeling very frightened. I just spoke with my girlfriend on the road and she said just to keep taking my meds and try to relax. It's really all I can do! If anybody has time to "chat", I would appreciate it because it's the only connection I have with the outside world. Thanks, Jerry

I know the feeling you are going through. I have been there. And I still have days like that now, where the pain is so overwhelming, I don't know what to do and nothing I take helps. I am glad your son is going to help you. Let him help advocate for you at that doctors. I find the best thing I can do for myself when I am feeling like you are right now, is to pamper myself the best I can. I stop pressuring myself about things like the housecleaning, and other responsibilities that can wait, and just focus on taking care of me and doing the things that make me feel better. I am not sure if you saw my post about my new hobby, but I have found that it has helped me take my focus off of my pain and has helped overall reduce my pain more than any medication I have tried. Finding something to distract you away from the pain can be very effective. It has helped my attitude greatly improve also. I never thought a silly little hobby would do this much for me, but it has and I am thrilled and so is my husband. I have talked to my pain doc about it and he said distraction is a very powerful tool in the pain control arsenal. I hope you get to feeling better and that visiting your old OS can help. Amy, if you read the chat line, I mentioned that I decided not to go to the old OS because he pretty much sent me on my way. I knew it would be a waste of time and money. I'm also glad you noticed the desperation in my message because I am. It's difficult for me to explain how deranged everything is in my head. I did go up to the chiropractor yesterday (I don't even know how I got up there) and it's so funny because I asked him the same question I ask everyone, "Do I look different to you". He said "No, did you do something different with your hair, etc." He just said that I need new dentures and, of course, he's against all the drugs I'm taking. I almost feel like people are dicking me around. I'm to the point that I don't know which doctor to call. I do have the appointment with the new OS on the 12th, but it is SO bad. I know that putting the dentures in there has just made it worse. I go over and over what different counselors have said to me and I have to watch it because it makes me so angry that no one has understood that I'm afraid I might explode or implode. You know, it's so strange because I don't have headaches like other people complain of just this terrible tightness. As I mentioned earlier, I can't even go to the ER because there's really nothing they can do. Thanks again for your support. Hope everyone else is doing better than I am.

The art of distraction is indeed very powerful. Just recently, I have started exercising more again. I started doing yoga by watching a DVD at home. I like it so much that I am going to take classes. It helped my headaches a lot--just doing a few minutes of at-home yoga...so I can't even imagine how much a real class might help, or at least I hope so! I realize you may not want to run out and do yoga...but the point is, there must be SOMETHING that can help distract you a little bit. It doesn't have to be physically strenuous...it just needs to be enjoyable so that it will distract you. If you do nothing but worry about your pain all day, it will take over your entire life. AND the pain will seem more intense. As Amy pointed out, her hobby makes the pain seem less intense, and that is fantastic! Unfortunately, we cannot always rely on medications to get rid of the pain. They play an important role in fighting the pain, but many times are not enough. That is where other methods come in...massage, acupuncture, exercise...and the art of distraction!!! So...see the doctors that you need to see, and use the medications that you need...but also try your very best to occupy yourself with an enjoyable activity. And it is the best tool I have right now. It has turned out to be the most powerful "drug" I have. I am on a lot of heavy duty narcotics - but the distraction truly helps me more than any of them. When my pain is running high, I turn to my beads and start creating. When I get into the "zone", my pain fades into the background and before I know it, hours have gone by and I have not noticed the pain, my muscles have relaxed, and my pain has eased down. And I have created something beautiful to boot! I have always had an artistic side with no outlet for it. This suits me perfectly. It is very hands on, and takes a lot of concentration. I could not do anything nearly as physical as yoga - I have tried it. There were many moves I could not do. But I did enjoy it, the parts I could do. The problem I had was my kids wanted to do it with me, lol. It broke my concentration every time, lol. My kids love to go through my beads and look at them all and I have a large stash of kid beads that they can use to create their own stuff. Anyways, the point is - we should never underestimate the minds ability to help control pain. The mind/body connection is powerful. I found the more I hung out here, and focused on my TMJ and pain, the worse it was. It ran my life. Now that I have taken a step back, my pain is much more under MY control. AMy

Then I take the Vicodin and move to the couch. The only distraction I can manage is TV and playing this solitaire game I have. I'm trying to figure out how much of my problem is the drugs. Carol sent me a loving PM on going to a denture dentist rather than an OS. This guy I made an appointment with is a denture dentist as well as OS/maxillofacial doctor. The holiday didn't mean much to me unfortunately. I can see three different fireworks shows out my living room window that are all synchronized. I don't know how they do that. To tell you the truth, this all seems very surreal to me. Thanks again for being there for me!!!!

Do you need (a) surgery; or (b) dentures that fit and bite right for you? I'm truly sorry you're in such a spiral. The one thing we both have in common is that we have to risk finding someone who can create a prosthetic bite for us. Not having a good bite will mess with your brain. I hope we both get the help we need with this soon. I had my second visit with an osteopath today who did subtle on my head for about 10 minutes and then my sacrum for another 5-10 minutes. I'm feeling different and excited, like my body's alignment might get some correction, and it might bee a good time soon to work on my bite buildup as well. I just need to figure out who it's going to be and how to pay for it...

He is an OS so I just want him to take a look. I should've NEVER shoved the old dentures in my mouth because it just made it worse!

She recommended that I not mess around with trying to get off the meds without a doctor's advice. I've put in a call today (Sunday) to get me in ASAP. My son will take me. Quite frankly, I'm trying not to flip out. It's not from pain. It's what has happened to my jaw along with the drugs. Say a prayer. . .

I was just going to go online and look up an OS/Maxillofacial guy that is close to me. My primary is just covering his you-know-what. He's very respected in the medical community and I don't really blame him but he's not helping. I told him I felt like I was dying when I was there (I'm so sorry for the drama). He listened to my heart and chest and said come back for blood tests. I know it's the jaws. I'm just really overwhelmed.

I know you will find the right doctor soon. It is all on finding the correct doctor for your problem. Have you tried a TMJ specialist? I know you have gone to different types of doctors. Maybe a specialist who knows about dentures too will be able to help you. It will get better soon. Michelle W.
