I told him I take advil for pain. He wants me to go 3 weeks without taking any otc drugs. Then be tested again and see what my liver number does. He says he can get me an rx for neurotin I don't think that is spelled right. Does that RX help anyone?? He says it is for nerve pain. I go see Dr Austin on Dec 1 so I will just wait and ask him. I couldn't take it. It made me want to climb the walls. I do know of a lot of people who take it. I'm confused that advil might be a problem with your liver......(was it the enzymes?) and neurotin wouldn't be. It's a rather strong drug. I think asking Dr. Austin is a great idea. I found out the 1 Bp RX I take can elevate the liver numbers!!!! So I called my Dr. I haven't heard from him. I'll go 3 weeks without taking advil and have another blood test and see what it shows. My Dr seems to think advil could raise the liver number. DR Austin didn't think so. Kidney problems go with taking too much advil not liver??? It is confusing. I only take about 2-3 advil a day so I don't get it??? Lu I sent you a PM thanks

Posts: 460 (11/27/08 07:10:44) Member I Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi, I think it is a good idea to get off the OTC drugs and then see what your test results are, and try to "pin" down what is causing the elevation of your liver function tests. It could be drug related or something else entirely. As you said, I DO believe most NSAIDs are eliminated via the kidneys and not the liver.........(but I am a very sleepy nurse and don't take that as dogma!). I know kidney patients with certain conditions are NOT allowed to have NSAIDs like Toradol and ibuprofen for those types of reasons, that I am certain of. As to Neurontin affecting it, it really isn't a matter of it being a "strong drug" as much as HOW the body breaks it down - that is the key element and your doctor should know those facts before prescribing a drug! :>) Different drugs are excreted from the body by different organs, they have different half lives, it can be affected by what else you ingest etc. People eat Tylenol like candy, yet they may not know it is a nasty drug for your liver and if done with alcohol the results are magnified big time........ I tried Neurontin years back. It didn't help me, my pain wasn't due to nerve pain at that time and I felt like I was in a fog. Couldn't think straight it felt like. So I quit taking it. Fortunately the fogginess cleared up pretty fast! But for some people it really is helpful as a pain management drug. You just have to be the "right case and right patient" for it. Isn't that the way it always is for drugs?! Right drug, right patient, right dose, right reason for prescription! Good luck! Ginni in WI

I try to take more and it can put me into a real fog, until I get my tolerance built up. The nerve pain in my back can be unreal at times. If I take the Neurontin, it will ease it, so it does work. I take it every night before I go to sleep and helps me sleep better. I guess I haven't really had nerve pain in my face too much, other than when I get a headache. Then it hurts everywhere. I have quit the Neurontin totally a few times but the headaches seem to come back with a vengence. A low dose seems to do the trick.(Most times). Elaine

I fell on ice yesterday and the pain was so bad tonight I took 2 advil. I feel so much better. Thanks for letting me know about the RX the Dr wanted me to start. Lu

Now the doctor is wanting me to take Neurontin again for sciatic nerve pain. I have heard it destroys your teeth but I don't know how true this is. I didn't have any trouble with my teeth, but maybe I have yet to reap the side effect. I would like to get off some medication, but I am not sure I am tough enough. Your Signature ... Michelle
