To the best of my knowledge both as an RN and as a patient - MS Contin is simply slow release morphine take orally. It comes in various dosages ( I believe the lowest dose tab is 15 mgs) and can be prescribed to be taken one to three times a day. If more than that they may go up to the next dose and go back to once or twice a day. Theory wise it lasts 12 hours. When my jaws semi ok it held me 12 hours (had to start taking it early in 08). A few months ago had to jump to the three times daily dose. Oxycontin is the to the best of my knowledge a long acting version of Percodan aka oxycodone (hydrocodone being Vicodin). It seems to have the reputation of being more quickly habit forming than the MS Contin. Neither drug should ever NEVER be taken as crushed or split etc or the pt may get the entire dose at once and that could be lethal. Esp if mixed with other opiates or alcohol etc. Hope this helps. In previous posts I told all about the withdrawals which I am still dealing with on a daily basis. When I asked the doctor here, which is worst to come off of, the Oxycontin or the Morphine. Her reply was, "do you want to be shot with a gun or stabbed with a knife"? She said they are both brutal drugs to come off and should have been a long slow taper instead of the 15 day wean like they did to me. She said it takes about a month for every year that I have been on the drug before I will feel normal. So I figure I have about four more months of jitters, the feeling that I am going to come out of my skin really sucks. From what I have read on the net, everyone who comes off opiates seem to have a problem with sleep. That is the worst of it for me right now. Without sleep you have a heck of a time being able to function. I am trying to find more information on this total disaster that I am going through. I believe it would have not been so bad had a knowledgeable doctor tapered you off very slowly. maybe not, but for most people, that does work much better. I've managed so far on & off with Tyl#3 and the last year went up to Tyl#4. Codeine has always worked well for me and I haven't had any trouble getting off with a taper many times. I had thought and talked to my Pain Doc about the next step for my back would be one of the morphine drugs. With 4 levels of disc in my back shot and no longer able to take steroids or have Epidurals, it seemed it would be sooner than later. After reading your story I would have been hesitant, but it was not meant to be. I found out I've become allergic to morphine. I had a severe reaction to it with my sinus surgery last Sept. They told me to never take it again, after surgery or otherwise, in any form. We (all of my doc's & me) hope having the Knee Replacement will help my back. I am walking balanced for the first time in over 3 years.......however, my back was wrecked before my knee problems so I don't know if it will help, I hope so. I'm not sure what I'll do in the future other than pray my back doesn't get any worse. I hope you'll start to get over this awful withdrawal soon. Thank you again for giving us this information. I'm sure it will help many.

Had the doctor tapered me for a longer period instead of 15 days it wouldn't have been so brutal. They basically dropped me cold turkey as if there was no taper at all. They could have killed me with what they did. My blood pressure hit 185/156 and they kept telling me it was normal for someone going through withdrawals and did nothing. The ER told me I was at stroke level and were very concerned about the blood pressure. My blood pressure still spikes up there some days but I am on blood pressure medicine trying to get it under control. It is better but not out of the woods yet. I really think once this withdrawal nervous jittter goes away, I am hoping my blood pressure will go back to normal. I got into a couple of the drug withdrawals forums and it seems that everyone has the same sleep problem. I know there were days I was awake for 24 hours straight, would go to bed and lucky to sleep two hours. Makes for long days and longer nights. I have days my back hurts but I think it hurt worse on the pain pills. Must be some sort of referred pain there or something. I wanted to see how bad my pain was without the pills and I am definitely glad I am off them. Most days I do ok with the pain. Just have to set some limits and quit trying to be "Wonder Woman". I do wonder how I made it this far? Stubborn Taurus for ya....LOL Cymy, Thanks for the new topic. I wish Cheryl would post. She knows so much and has helped me a lot.
