Continuing this from the Welcome section above! What is the biggest problem you all have with TMJ? I know they are all horrible. The worst and most upsetting for me is the muscle spasms which affect the back of my head at the base of my skull, my face and lots of time my neck. It is more of a spasticity really and the main thing that I have to treated to function. It's like a vibration in my head all the time and makes me dizzy, off-balance to the point I can't read, write, drive, etc., almost can't function at all with it really. If I keep this under control then the hurting sort of pain tends to stay more under control. Does anyone else have this to this degree?

Terri - welcome to our group. Actually, I have a lot of the symptoms you talk about, including dreadful pain. My primary doctor believes it's all coming from the cervical problems in that part of my spine. Other specialists, including neurologists and TMJ dentists have said that it is chronic myofascial pain which is a neuromuscular disease. You might consider getting a MRI of your neck. I am looking for competent therapists to help with this. I also was scheduled to be part of a pain clinic but I fell and broke my wrist last weekend that now will require surgery.
Are we having fun yet? I would be happy to answer any questins you might have. Good luck! Jerry |

Try Myofascial Release Therapy. Its the best non surgical therapy available. You need to try multiple sessions, give it 3 or 4 maybe to see if it helps. |

HI, for me the worst symptons are the chronic pain and the pins and needles/ tingling 24hours a day in my face due to a nerve reaction following surgery.
ive had about 6 or 7 TMJ surgeries, the last one being a total joint replacement using TMJ concepts two weeks ago. If only i could go back to the time when fitting a big mac in my mouth was the only problem i had.. and im 22 :( |

Hi Fiesta,
Sorry you had to have so many surgeries. How are you doing other than the nerve problem with the Concepts? I ask because I need or they tell me I need a TJR. I can get my mouth open as wide as my index and middle finger. That is it for me. I am on a whole list of medications for nerve pain, joint pain, muscle relaxers and anti-depressants. The surgery is not covered by my insurance so no surgery for me. I know my symptoms have gotten much better over the years since I had my unsuccessful arthroplasty. I hope yours become less pronounced and eventually go all away. We have one member Ginni that had a TMJ Concepts surgery 18 months ago and is doing very well. There is progress being made out there still for us. I just want to welcome you to the board. Feel free to post about anything you would like regarding your TMJ Concepts experience. It would help me a lot as I may someday may be forced into the surgery.

Michelle, thanks for the welcome, very glad to hear your symptons have been getting better over time. why is it you need tjr at present? is it because of the pain or degenerative arthritis like myself. i could only fit my index and middlefinger in my mouth for 3 years, now i can only firt my index finger although i suppose it is still early days for me to judge on the tjr surgery as its only been 2 weeks. however out the post op few week revovery period has found to be very painful for myself. a few days i had bad pain in the joint itself, and most recently the pain has moved to the end of the implant right on my jaw line. this is bad at the moment and am thinking to make my follow up appointment a lot sooner than planned with my surgeon.
i really do hope after a few weeks i will see soome drastic changes in pain and ROM, although if you ask me right now, i would definately go back a few surgeries ago and call it a day. My swelling has gone down a lot but still very obvious, i can also feel the implant if i gently press on my jawline, it is very promenent at the moment and am only hoping it will settle down over time. i have found it very hard to find people that i am able to ask the questions i want to know, even if it was silly questions like where will the scars be on my face, is the implant magnetic, how do insert the drain tube through my skin. I have graphic pictures, mri scans, and i even have actual footage of my Minesectomy surgery to remove the disc, my surgeon wanted to film it as i was a special case of his. some people cant even look at the photos let alone watch a video. i however am very interested in everything there is to know about tmj. I would like to answer any of your questions, of course just being my opinion, so feel free to ask me anything. Dean |

Hi Dean,
The reason I need a TJR is because I have severe degenerative osteoarthritis on both sides. If I can manage to continue to eat and keep somewhat of a workable opening for the dentist I will not have any further surgery. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't eat solid food anymore if I would change my mind about the surgery. I would have to think about it a long time. I manage my pain through pain management and I have since 2004. I hope you continue to see continued progress in ROM, pain and post operative healing. I was wondering if you got to the point where you could not eat solid food anymore or what was the final straw that made you decide to have the surgery for the TJR? Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Michelle

Hi,
I could eat solid foods before the tjr however sometimes it was extremely painful and would last a few days if i over stretched it. which is easy to do when you are really hungry. i dont think there was one particular thing that made me decide on the tjr, more a collection of everything. the pain, mouth opening, muscle spasms, arthritis and i think simply being aware that my mandible and tempporal bones had fused together and would never be the same again. My surgeon has given me some anti-depressants called amitryptiline on a tempory basis, not because i am depressed but because a side effect of these tablets are to stop nerve pain. i am a bit weary of these as ive been told they can be addictive and alter your state of mind which would not be good for me. All i would say is ask as many different people as many questions as you can, do a lot of reading, and dont make a decision out of nowhere. perhaps in a few months i will have a better understanding of TMJ concepts, not really fair for me judge during the post op recovery. Hang in there with healing process. I appreciate your input.
You mentioned being on a medication for nerve pain. There are a couple of newer medications that work really well for nerve pain one is called Keppra and the other one is Neurontin. I have taken both of these medications with good results for nerve pain. Right now I am on Keppra two tablets twice a day. I am not trying to second guess your doctor, just give you a couple other options that might have less side effects and work better from what I have read on the boards. I feel like the more information we all have regarding our situation the more empowered and in control we feel-instead of the opposite. I hope to hear rom you more in the future. Best wishes,
