It has now been two years for me since I had my bilateral TM joint replacements!

I have been blessed with what I consider pretty much a pain free post recovery period (and for me, any recovery pain was not as bad as my preop pain!). I still eat anything I want (I don't bother chewing gum) without a problem.

If it all fell apart tomorrow (highly doubtful!), I would do it all over again without hesitation.

I realize not everyone has a problem that will respond to joint replacement - in my case, my situation was, it turned out, "all in the joints", so for me it was the answer. I am fortunate in that respect, odd as it may sound to some.

If anyone has any questions, I am free to answer them, just contact me.
Well had some adventure Monday seeing my Surgeon and taking another look at the left joint. We are trying to seeing if we can use some prednisone with the hope if things so badly off with my occlusion in such a short amount of time. We are not even sure if it is the left or right joint that is causing every thing to change two mm moth left occlusion. It is my left jaw joint that is hurting so much. But as many of know there is something called referred pain and that can very well what had happening here.

One of the best things about my appointment was getting to see my Step-Father in whom I had not seen in three years. We live about a hundred miles apart and he is so busy with his life. Just was sad that I was feeling so bad with pain that just did not feel all that chatty. My Dr. Had even given me an IM injection of 150 of Demerol with no effect at all. Had so much pain that I was sick to my stomach for the drive back and forth to my home.

Well hope everyone had...

Hi my name is Cindy, and I am excited about finding a support group for TMJ. A little about myself and my TMJ surgical past. One of the reasons I had looked up a support group after dealing over thirty years and around sixty surgeries. Is well, Monday I,m once again heading to my surgeons office as we are looking to see if it will be time to do my fifth total TMJ replacement on the left joint.

One would be shocked to learn that all of this mess is due to a guy wanting to get into one of his residents pants. Yup, that,s what I,m saying with a mixture of deppressision and anger. It was the chief of oral surgery wanting to impress one of his residents in the prothidontic department at the VA in San Francisco. Way back in December 1981 after I had been in the Air Force and had been hit in the mouth breaking a couple of teeth, and jaw joints but had not had any work done except one tooth extracted while still in the service. I was only 21 at the time I had my first appointment...

As many of you know from other postings, my TJR bilaterally, a year ago, was a great success, and it was the answer to my problems - though it took me 9 years to find the answers - and much of that search for the right answer was done by me, sort of plugging away, desperately, convinced I had a serious joint problem (I did) and trying to find the right doctor.

Here is my desire for feedback - along the way, when the first oral surgeon, after 2 scopes, decided - it seemed - that he had no more to offer me and seemed to be VERY doubtful that I had anything truly joint related going on (despite my symptoms, long story, look in archives?) and he actually warned me AGAINST having more surgery "it will not help and it will probably make things worse" etc - he referred me to a so called TMJ specialty and oral facial pain clinic - the doctor in that clinic he referred me to was NOT the one I ended up seeing - that person was booked up so far ahead - the other partner had a...

Continuing this from the Welcome section above! What is the biggest problem you all have with TMJ? I know they are all horrible. The worst and most upsetting for me is the muscle spasms which affect the back of my head at the base of my skull, my face and lots of time my neck. It is more of a spasticity really and the main thing that I have to treated to function. It's like a vibration in my head all the time and makes me dizzy, off-balance to the point I can't read, write, drive, etc., almost can't function at all with it really. If I keep this under control then the hurting sort of pain tends to stay more under control. Does anyone else have this to this degree?

I've never met anyone that has bad TMJ and would love to chat live sometimes.

Terri

Hello all,
Some of the older members remember me. I am a patient who struggled for approx 9 years to get help for my jaw problems - went through one oral surgeon locally (two scopes), one supposed referred to specialist (a disaster IMHO, expensive, worthless and emotionally traumatic in the long run when she didn't seem to believe me when I said her methods were making me WORSE), and, finally, with the help of my own internet research and talking to a willing TMJ surgeon in NYC area, he referred me to someone in my "own back yard" (hour and a half drive away). That OS quickly summed up the Xrays, MRI's, history of my jaw problems, with progression of same, more XRays, and in the LONG run - after trying several slightly less invasive methods - said I needed TJRs.

One year ago this week, June 23, 2009, to be precise, I had both joints removed and replaced with CONCEPTS joints in a long but uncomplicated surgery.

A year later?
A Columbia scientist has become the first to grow a complex, full-size bone from human adult stem cells.

Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic, a professor of biomedical engineering at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, reports that her team grew a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) from stem cells derived from bone marrow.
